The Art of Scent: Unravelling the Symphony of Natural Essential Oil Perfumes

In the world of perfumery, the language used to describe fragrances is as intricate and nuanced as the scents themselves. When it comes to our natural essential oil perfumes, understanding key terminology is important in unravelling the complexity of our aromatic compositions. In this article, we will explore five of these terms crucial in comprehending and appreciating the artistry of natural perfumery: Top notes, base notes, middle (or heart) notes, sillage (throw), and longevity.

  1. Top Notes

Imagine the exhilarating burst of fragrance that greets you when you first apply  a perfume - that's the magic of top notes. These are the initial, fleeting impressions that dance on your skin and tantalize your senses within the first few minutes of application. In the world of natural essential oil perfumes, top notes are often derived from light, volatile oils that evaporate quickly. Citrus oils like bergamot, lemon, and orange are classic examples, bringing a refreshing and zesty kick to the olfactory journey.

These ephemeral top notes serve as the introduction to the fragrance, creating a captivating prelude that captures attention and sets the stage for the unfolding symphony of scents.

  1. Middle Notes

Once the top notes have gracefully faded, the heart (or middle) notes take center stage, weaving the true narrative of the perfume. Middle notes emerge after the initial application and linger for a more extended period, typically between 20 minutes to an hour. In the realm of natural essential oils, floral extracts like geranium, jasmine, and lavender often play pivotal roles in creating the heart of a fragrance.

These heart notes add depth and complexity, providing the emotional core of the perfume. They contribute to the overall character and theme, bringing a sense of balance and harmony to the aromatic blend.

  1. Base Notes

As the fragrance journey progresses, the base notes emerge, grounding the composition with a solid and lasting foundation. Base notes are the anchor of the perfume, persisting for hours and even days on the skin. In natural essential oil perfumes, ingredients like patchouli, vanilla, and sandalwood often take on the role of base notes, imparting a rich and lingering character to the fragrance.

The base notes not only enhance the longevity of the perfume but also contribute to its overall structure and resonance. They create a lasting impression that becomes intimately intertwined with the wearer's skin.

  1. Sillage

Sillage, often referred to as the "trail" or "throw" of a perfume, is the measure of how far and wide the fragrance extends from the person wearing it. In natural essential oil perfumes, sillage is influenced by the concentration of the oils, their volatility, and the overall composition of the fragrance.

While synthetic perfumes might rely on potent chemical fixatives to enhance sillage, natural perfumes derive their captivating trail from the intricate interplay of essential oils. The sillage of a natural perfume is often more subtle and intimately tied to the body's natural chemistry, creating an alluring aura that captivates those in the wearer's presence.

Understanding sillage involves recognizing the delicate balance between a fragrance that is intimately personal and one that extends its aromatic tendrils to envelop those in proximity. Natural essential oil perfumes, with their nuanced compositions, often offer a more intimate and close-knit sillage, allowing wearers to share their fragrance with those closest to them.

We like to say that “your perfume will not enter the room before you do”. What we mean is that the sillage is not as overwhelming as it can be in synthetic perfumes. A potent sillage can also cause unpleasant reactions in those around you, like sneezing or watery eyes. This is why some people can’t wear synthetic fragrance: either they are allergic or somebody they know is.

  1. Longevity

The longevity of a perfume refers to how long the fragrance remains perceptible on the skin. In the realm of natural essential oil perfumes, the longevity is influenced by the volatility and tenacity of the oils used in the composition. Unlike synthetic fragrances that might rely on long-lasting synthetic molecules, natural perfumes unfold dynamically on the skin, evolving and transforming over time.

Essential oils with robust base notes, such as cedarwood, frankincense, and myrrh, contribute to the extended staying power of natural perfumes. The longevity of a fragrance adds to its allure, allowing the wearer to experience the unfolding journey of scents throughout the day.

Moreover, the longevity of a natural perfume is often a testament to the quality and purity of the essential oils used. Here at Wilderness Lab, we pride ourselves on only using the BEST quality oils. They are more expensive to source, but we think it’s worth it for the elevation they give our fragrances. High-quality natural oils, carefully extracted and blended, have the potential to create a lasting olfactory experience that evolves beautifully on the skin.

One thing to note when it comes to longevity: sometimes the wearer is not able to smell the perfume on themselves after a while. This is due to your nose actually growing used to the scent. This is an evolutionary adaptation to help us sense danger. When we smell the same thing over time, our brain classifies it as non-consequential. But if we smell something new, we notice it because it could indicate danger (fire, rotting food etc).  So just because you can’t smell your perfume, doesn’t mean that nobody else can either.
